Energy saving initative on track for big savings
APCO service station set to save $700,000 within 20 years with one of the largest Solar PV installations on a service station
At a time when business and residential investment
in solar energy is steadily increasing, the installation
of a large scale Solar PV system at the APCO service
station in Albury, New South Wales demonstrates just
how beneficial investment in solar energy can be.
The system was installed during 2013 by Secure
Intelligence Solar and is helping APCO control the
rising cost of electricity and bringing the company
to the forefront as one of the enviro-friendly
leaders within the service station industry.
According to David Jeffreys, APCO Site Development
Manager, solar energy is an investment that quickly
pays dividends. " In the first month, we saved $1,600 on
our bill, and we installed and ran two new coolrooms
to the site after installing the Solar Power system".
The system is one of the world's largest rooftop
Solar PV systems on a canopy. The APCO station's
canopy spans approximately 35 metres, is 25 metres
wide and stands 6 metres high. Prior to the installation
of Solar PV, APCO considered the space above the
canopy as dead real-estate as it was never going
to be used to house any form of machinery. Now,
the space is generating considerable cost savings.
According to David, “Our company survival and
expansion relies on solid and rational business
decisions. The environmental benefit of this project
is therefore a real world triumph where financial and
sustainable payoffs are experienced concurrently.
" In our case sustainability proved feasible and
profitable, and is something we can enjoy and
be proud of. It’s nice to be investing in renewable
energy as a fuel retailer when combustion
fuels are often seen as a necessary evil.”
The APCO site is not alone, everyday Australians
and businesses big and small are realising that it is
affordable to generate their own electricity. According
to recent Roy Morgan Research nearly one in six
Australians have installed solar panels in their homes
and the proportion of Australians with solar panels
has more than doubled in the past three years.
Businesses with heav y electricity usage are increasingly
looking to solar as an affordable investment to reduce
operating costs and mitigate risk. This has been driven by
many factors and, while government support has played
a role, a key factor has been the steady rise in electricity
prices over the last five years. Additionally an increased
emphasis on corporate responsibility and business
environmental impacts has seen many businesses look
for more sustainable energy solutions. Solar PV offers
low operational and maintenance costs and provides an
attractive return on investment.
APCO Albury, expects its investment in solar
to be paid off in less than four years, and
according to David "it looks like we are on
track to save $700,000 (over 20 years)!"
