Daly’s SUPA IGA Portland recognised as one of Victoria's best supermarkets
Daly’s SUPA IGA Portland has risen from the
ashes to be named a winner at the IGA Victorian
Retailer of the Year Awards, which were held this
month at the Grand Plaza Ball Room in Melbourne.
The store, was which gutted by a fire two years
ago, was the recipient of the prestigious Retailer of
the Year Award, proving to be a standout amongst
its SUPA IGA counterparts across the state.
In addition to receiving this impressive accolade,
the store also received the SUPA IGA Checkout
Service Department of The Year Award and SUPA
IGA Grocery Department of The Year Award,
in addition to receiving several nominations
including the Store Manager of The Year Award.
The awards recognise the inspirational efforts of
store owners the Daly family and their staff in creating
a truly innovative, state-of the-art supermarket
for the local community following the devastating
loss of the much-loved Portland supermarket.
In the early hours of 29 April 2012, an electrical fault
started a fire at Daly’s SUPA IGA Portland which tore
through the store. The event had a huge impact not
only on owners Michael and Peter Daly and their
100 staff members, but the entire local community,
who had depended on the supermarket for years.
The Daly family, store manager Nathan Lovell, staff
members and the Portland community acted swiftly,
rallying together to clean up and help rebuild the store
in just nine months – a truly phenomenal result and
testament to the efforts of the tight-knit team at the store.
Following the fire, the Daly’s took the opportunity to
create a new shopping destination in a class of its own.
Undertaking a huge amount of research, developing
an insight into their customer needs and heavily
investing in the store in terms of layout, range, price
and service, the Daly’s created a modern, first-class
shopping experience for the Portland community.
The supermarket evokes a marketplace feel, from
the huge range of fresh, gourmet and gluten-free
produce to the meticulously designed modern
interiors that boast ample space and perfectly
reflect the fresh and exciting products being sold.
The produce department takes pride of place as
the centrepiece of the store and has fast become
one of Portland’s best fresh food destinations.
The two owners ensure nothing but the freshest
market quality produce in this department,
which is always beautifully presented with well-
proportioned and impressively set out displays.
Developing an understanding of the local
demographic has also been important for the
Daly family and their team at the store and plenty
of hard work has gone into customising their
range to meet the needs of their shoppers.
After the fire, the Daly’s also set out to create
Portland’s ‘greenest’ supermarket by utilising the latest
energy efficiency technology and sustainable design
principles. Every aspect of the store was carefully
thought through with the aim of reducing energy
consumption and environmental impact. A fully
insulated ‘white’ reflective roof with 100mm insulation
features amongst the store’s many sustainability
initiatives, along with specially designed double
glazed windows, LED and energy efficient lighting
and ‘Smart Switching’ technology in the office areas.
The supermarket also features a Hybrid Refrigeration
System which utilises environmentally friendly C02
gas in place of standard refrigerant gas. An innovative
heat reclaim and air conditioning system also helps
reduce electricity usage at the store by using energy
from the refrigeration system for heating and cooling.
Commenting on the awards, Michael Daly said, “ It is
such an honour to have won these accolades amongst
the state’s many outstanding SUPA IGA supermarkets.
“ T hey are a true testament to the hard work
and dedication of our team at Daly’s SUPA IGA
Portland following the fire. It was an exhausting
nine months, and we would not be where we
are today without their tremendous efforts.
“ Peter and I would like to extend our thanks
to our team here at the store as well as all our
customers who shop at the supermarket and who
have given so much support over the past two
years to make it the great store that it is today,”
Daly’s SUPA IGA Portland will now represent Victoria
at the IGA National Retailer of the Year Awards at the
IGA National Expo & Conference on the Gold Coast in
July, going up against the best of the best in Australia.
